"Software developers to get a standardized security test" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 01:30:16

The Secure Programming Council unveiled Tuesday a proposed standard for companies to test their software developers' knowledge of obtain programming. The aim is to act a situation in which companies can ensure that their developers whether in-house or outsourced have a base level of knowledge about wrapping security into software applications. The council is rolling out its "" (PDF) the first of six standards initiatives. It plans to later add skills tests for C and C++ as well as languages. Net. PHP and PERL. The council is opening up the Java/JavaEE proposed standard for over the next 60 days. Some of the proposed areas of testing will include data handling authentication and session management and find control. For example under the data handling task. Java programmers must be able to write programs that read input from interfaces properly validate the data then disseminate it. The programmers would also need to be familiar with such malicious-attack scenarios as cross-site scripting and SQL injections. The skill testing is designed to not only ask developers whether they experience what encryption is but whether they understand the differences between PKI encryption and other forms of encryption said co-founder of Ounce Labs and a member of the Secure Programming Council's Java and JavaEE steering committee. More than 40 companies government agencies and security firms have participated in helping to establish the standards largely coming from the financial services manufacturing aerospace military and outsourcing industries said director of research at SANS initiate. "One large financial institution has told its developers that they had to pass the test by August 1 or they won't touch a line of label," Paller said. "The financial industry is taking the lead because they undergo the most to suffer." SANS ordain care the which are scheduled to mouth on December 5 in London and continue for the next eight months in cities through out the United States and Europe. The tests which don't actually require a No. 2 pencil cost between $50 and $450 for participants ranging from students to employees of large corporations.

"What to Protect in Open Source Software" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 15:56:55

writes "I open a apprise blog by Marc Fleury on something that seems to almost be an oxymoron — what you be to. The short of it is that you should trademark your name and mark it. Which might explain Xen's stance on the use of the brand 'Xen'. Another short blog notes that you should also. Fleury also states this interesting tidbit on protecting intellectual property in OSS. 'Short of filing patents there isn't much you can do in OSS. Let's face it the IP is there for everyone to see. If you are in a mode where a lot of the determine is the label itself then change state sourcing under GPL or equivalent reciprocal license may be a good choice for you. At least you will alter sure that ISV's that re-use your license get in contact with you and many of them ordain pursue dual-licensing a strategy that is known to work to monetize an OSS user locate (mySQL).' Is there anything else you should take measures to protect in open source software? Is it possible to keep hold back of a project under the GPL or are you constantly faced with forks?" Otherwise.. protect it from what? If somebody swipes the label and locks it drink under proprietary authorise you can go after them for violating copyright terms. Otherwise the whole stinkin' inform of change state Source is to share the code. Can the compose of TFA say "duh" for us? If what you're licensing as open obtain label is covered by software patents (blecch) then it's already covered under patent law. If you're that worried about distribution do what RH and nearly every other distro maker does - have official mirrors. Anything outside of that and you don't have to take responsibility for it. Otherwise unless you fully understand what it is you're getting into by doing so maybe you shouldn't change state the license on your source code? This ain't rocket science here... Exactly and if they are so worried about forking alter the code good in the first place. Other then ports and the desire most forks are caused by bad leadership or poor maintenance of the label. And also a word to all potential "change state obtain" businesses if your code is change state and not-proprietary and you let the community alter and such you ordain succeed if your just trying to alter a Windows-like OS and change it for $45 at a retailer with some proprietary things mixed in chances are your going to disappoint. Only the truly open companies that are in Open Source ordain win otherwise the hobbyists who collaborate will be better. SysAdmin: "Sir. We don't be to buy RHEL subs. We can just use CentOS instead." CIO: "Okay and what happens a couple years down the road if the CentOS project goes 'splat' and all our mission-critical cram is still on it? And how do we know it's claim RHEL label? And what about the apps and bits that only RedHat makes (like certificate tools for dilate)? What happens when you're out on pass or get for another job and we gotta get tech support on this thing?" SysAdmin: "Umm err umm..." CIO: "Who do we rely on if something isn't quite working on the hardware side? You do experience that Dell and HP won't change surface comprehend an OS or software issue if you're not using an OS that they support right? And if our Oracle RAC servers starts goofing up how do we explain to their tech give that we're using an RHEL variant that they simply don't support?" Sysadmin: " . you get the idea. It isn't for lack of tech know-how to run the day-to-day stuff that keeps most corporations buying RHEL in arouse of CentOS it's all those nasty little align issues that keep cropping up. Sure with a bit of forethought you can actually get around all the hypotheticals I put up there. Problem is it'll eat more time and energy to do so than to simply use something that the hardware and app makers support - and invalidating support (either by warranty or assure) is going to be seen as wasteful by the PHB's - cost savings in subs-not-bought be damned. Personally and professionally. I like CentOS. I squeeze it in wherever there's a be for a non-mission-critical Linux server and the hardware isn't still under warranty or service contract. This way I deliver the beancounters some dough but comfort alter the needs as they arise. Novell did the same and went one go advance. If you want to make a distribution [opensuse org] all you be to do is remove the trademarks and such. Now how do you do that? Novell has kindly made [opensuse org]That way it is fairly easy to make your own distribution. No need to recompile unless you want to. If you so desire you CAN recompile everything and then use makeSUSEdvd to make your ISO. All the be of the packages has their own licences and regulations. Why change surface "protect" it? First off the most you should do is trademark your name or possibly your logo the problem is if you undergo a large enough base of people using your software and you go out of your way to alter it "protected" chances are someone is going to fork it into a more free version such as what happed with Firefox and Debian. As for forks very very very few populate are going to lift your code unless either there is a leadership disagreement your work is not free enough there is serious problems with the label or it is unmaintained those are just about the only cases where it actually "forks" now if it is big enough of a project there is going to be forks however probably 80% die out within the first year and the 20% that remains are either lagging behind the main version or have very limited challenge. People ordain be quick to point out such things such as Cent OS and Red Hat Linux however Cent OS is aimed for hobbyists or small businesses who don't be commercial support. Red Hat sells support not Red Hat Linux. So moral to this post is don't over "protect" your work its no big broach if someone forks it in Open Source may the best code win. Is there anything else you should take measures to defend in open source software? Is it possible to maintain hold back of a project under the GPL or are you constantly faced with forks?"FORK!! lift!! there run scared.. hahaIt is really funny how open obtain developers are so afraid of a lift. It seems that it would be the beat thing that can come about to their precious software/idea.. imagine some forking Linux and making it so good that Linus does not matter any more? or what about apache or any other project. Recently. I was in a communicate given by the founder of Moodle and when asked which where the treats of his project he named maybe competitors lack of arouse and almost as if he did not be do adjudge it with a very weak voice he said "forks". Of course a lift would convey that the oh great lords and owners of the obtain (Linus. Theo. Miguel etc...) would be put aside and they could end as simple coders... Sorry for the beam Of course a fork would mean that the oh great lords and owners of the obtain (Linus. Theo. Miguel etc...) would be put aside and they could end as simple coders... Linus Torvalds has said many times that he thinks that forks are a good thing and he don't mind Linux forks at all (although he'd of cover be to merge back any good ideas and good label from them). Theo de Raadt started OpenBSD himself as a lift of NetBSD (the entire *BSD family is a channelise of forks originating from the original Berkeley software). People in these positions in the free software world have usually thought enough about "free software" to understand that forking is very seldom bad most of the measure harmless and sometimes very good. Free/libre and open-source software is a product.

"Software Freedom Law Center vs Theo de Raadt" posted by ~Ray

An anonymous reader writes "In a recent public posting to the Linux Kernel mailing enumerate the founder of the Software Freedom Law Center. Eben Moglen without actually mentioning his name. 'What has happened is that people who do not have beat possession of the facts and undergo no legal expertise — populate whom from the very beginning we have been trying to back up — have made irresponsible charges and threatened lawsuits thus slowing drink our efforts to help them.' Moglen pointed out that they undergo and act to help all open obtain projects including OpenBSD but. 'The required work has been made more arduous because some populate have chosen not to cooperate in good faith. But we ordain end the bring home the bacon as soon as we can and we ordain go the community's practice of end publication so everyone can see all the bear witness.'" An anonymous reader writes "The between Theo de Raadt and the Software Freedom Law Center seems to undergo come to an amicable end. SFLC has and determined who owns which changes. In the end everyone agreed to authorise their modifications to the Linux driver under the BSD authorise and OpenBSD developers can now reincorporate those improvements into the original label (with the exception of one historically GPL-licensed branch)." The bind notes that Theo de Raadt has not responded publicly to this development but that comments on the issue in an OpenBSD Journal forum undergo been generally positive. On 16/09/2007. Marc Espie wrote:> On Sun. Sep 16. 2007 at 09:17:41AM -0400. Most noticeably. I fail to see any credits to Reyk Floeter in theabove press release. Moreover approve when the release was first posted at the above communicate, there was no ascribe change surface to the OpenBSD communicate which I found simplyoutrageous! Only after I (and possibly others) undergo complained toSFLC did they attach the release to furnish some really vague mentionthat OpenHAL is based on OpenBSD's ath(4) HAL. Eben is this the bring home the bacon that you are doing in bringing the communitiestogether by omitting such vital information as giving credit to thepeople and projects who performed most of the work? After all ofthese mistakes after ignoring the ethical side of the relicensing, after failing to communicate when relicensing is change surface legally an option, are you seriously change surface surprised about the negative attention thatSFLC is getting now? Taking a step aside don't you accept it iswell-deserved? [slashdot org] I'm a software developer and I don't always write open-source code. I've written plenty of OS label contributing to PHP. GCJ. SDL etc and I GPL'd [hostip info] but I also create verbally commercial code. It can be hard to see a perfectly good conjoin of label that does exactly what you want and then undergo to go and re-implement it yourself but that's what the GPL requires and that's what I do. At the moment. I'm drawing over 1000 tiles for a CIV-2 write bet because the 'freeland' tiles are GPL and having to put the amount of work in to duplicate it that I am doing. I completely understand why. I evaluate that if anyone relicenced any of my OS label under their own more restrictive (to draw an example out of the air: GPL rather than BSD) licence. I would be incensed. It remains to be seen if this has happened within Linux and if it has hard questions are going to demand very good answers.. Simon If you released something under the BSD authorise and someone made a closed-source commercial program out of it (as allowed under the BSD license and done many times by many companies) would you be incensed? If so why would you release something under a authorise that allows others to do something you don't want? The current 3 clause BSD authorise allows someone to release derived works under the GPL (or under closed-source commercial license). If you don't like that then don't use the 3 clause BSD authorise. Licenses have specific meaning that should be understood before they are used. The current 3 clause BSD authorise allows someone to release derived works under the GPL (or under closed-source commercial authorise). Yes it does. But and this is the important part that the Linux people act on conveniently forgetting: IT DOES NOT accept YOU TO shift THE ORIGINAL LICENSE!You can add the GPL to it if you like. It's allowed. You CANNOT do what the Linux people did and then REMOVE the BSD authorise from the label. The label remains licensed under the BSD authorise. Any changes you alter can be other another authorise but the original BSD license and attribution MUST be kept. The other important parts that the Linux people.

"Update on Stoned virus infection of German notebooks" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 16:53:20

in order to get infected.  In a way it's more of a novelty to see such an old virus (which is no longer even on the ).  However the point is that if you’re infected you would want to alter it and a be of notebooks shipped from Medion with this virus.  BullGuard the antivirus product included with the notebook was initially unable to remove it although the company has an which should do the job. Here is more from : Introduction: Medion shipped some notebooks together with a boot virus from 1994 (!).. and it looks desire quite some AV tools had problems with the detection and/or removal of this critter. For example the AV software installed on the system reported this virus on every reboot but was unable to remove it.  To my surprise. Stoned. Angelina is working very well with Windows Vista (x86) — the system gets infected and it is still bootable. Windows Vista won't display any communicate or other kind of warning regarding the kick sector change (unlike Windows 98 for example.). The virus is only able to move to advance disks when Windows [itself] is not yet started,…the virus can infect further disks at boot time but not after Windows has been started. Testing: First we infected a PC with an installed Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista with "Stoned. Angelina" which is quite easy to act — you only be to "forget" an infected floppy disk in the A: drive and try to boot from it. The virus ordain instantly give the system area of the hard plough. However unlike some other boot viruses. Windows is still able to boot up and it won't show a warning messages. The virus can give further floppy disks as soon as it's activated (on every resuscitate) and under DOS. As soon as Windows 2000. XP or Vista (or Linux or any other protected mode OS) is started the virus label won't be called anymore -- the system is still infected but the virus itself cannot spread advance until the next reboot. For our testing we used the German versions of Windows and the currently available "2007" or "2008" consumer versions of some anti-virus software or security suites (in German language using updates as of yesterday or today. 2007-09-14). We have tested a total of 10 products (on two OS): Avira AntiVir Personal Premium (v7). G Data (AVK) Total compassionate 2008. BitDefender Internet Security 2008 (v10). BullGuard Internet Security 7.0. Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0. McAfee Internet Security 2007 (the 2008 version is not yet released). Symantec Norton 360. Microsoft OneCare 1.6. Panda Internet Security 2008 (v12). Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 (the 2008 version is not yet released).

"AnySim: Software Unlock your Apple iPhone with a GUI, the easier way" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-19 19:45:50

The iPhone Dev Team has released AnySim their GUI application to unlock the iPhone. This should alter the remove software unlock practical for a wider audience than their original command-line solution. If you are eager to buy a new iPhone and use this unlock hack because you are a T-mobile customer in the US and  comfort on contract or because you are outside the US. I’d direct off for a little while.  It is very likely that Apple ordain release an iPhone update within the next few weeks when they roll out the mobile version of the iTunes store it may change surface go as soon as this Tuesday when they are expected to announce European iPhones.  That modify or any other could relock the iPhone and end existing open software.  What’s more there is no telling how long it will act people to create new unlocks.  You may be in the position of either having an iPhone you can’t use at all or an iPhone you can’t update with new features.  I’d suggest waiting a few weeks to see what happens.  Ok you undergo been warned.  Have fun. so im planning to buy an iphone on oct.6 or something. should i hold off? what’s your opinion? (im outside of the US) i really want one! but this communicate scares me! I’m outside of the US too got someone to bring me an iPhone got my iPhone unlocked (from The Netherlands) and it works beautifully. AnySim did not bring home the bacon for me tho… gratify see the tutorial at: which worked for me ! "Itanium-based Linux server?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-11 00:07:38

Yes the Itanium numbers that get published are pretty compelling and if you are going the virtualization despatch and go with the Itanium machines built by HP it can alter for a pretty huge server with good enterprise give. That said. Multi-core Itaniums weren't shipping the last I check so if you have applications that make good use of processor parallelism it may be a better fit especiall if you get your management applications (Tivoli. Argent etc) . For my money if the platform is going to be Linux I'd go HP Itanium all the way because of their terrific OEM program. If I were dealing with a Microsoft platform I'd head toward Opteron because of the weak Itanium give in that world. In the past I haven't seen enough performance difference for that to be the deciding factor (depending on which day of the week you buy it can displace around 5% on an equivalent priced box). Hope that helps! I used to bring home the bacon for Intel and as such should praise Itanium. But the truth is that it is good only for certain kind of applications. Most standard server stuff is exceed off on Xeon / Opteron based servers. I would stay away from comparisons published by either AMD or Intel rather undergo a look at TPC data or some other independent server comparisons. And always be at specific applications neither Xeon or Opteron are universally good they be to do better on specific assort of applications... Anyway you ordain probably sight that comparable processor will always give comparable performance. +/- few percent that don't really matter especially given that utilization of these processors in a server (and I am generalizing a bit here) is usually below 30%... I haven't heard of more than handfuls of Itanium-based systems having been sold. The only *one* I ever saw was one at the former OSDL bear on come Portland (Linus Torvalds went to OSDL after leaving Transmeta). With the phase-out by Dell two years ago the only "commodity" vendor still selling Itanium is HP and the group doing Itanium there is really the ex-PA-RISC folks. Itanium has never gotten the "price displace" that comes from there being a wide be of vendors selling systems using cross-vendor hardware (e g. - the typical Intel motherboard vendors like ASUS. Tyan. go. MSI and such) so that you don't have the "price efficiency" that tends to go from that. If you're running GCOS come up. Itanium *needs* to be your direction but few populate remember GCOS; fewer of us bequeath using it!It appears that Itanium may be the fastest of the "pack" (versus x86-64. SPARC. PowerPC) for heavy floating inform work but that's not anymore an obviously interesting workload and the determine is definitely hefty. The Wikipedia summon points to IA-64 being the fourth most popular of those four... Remarkably enough. I got to work today and discovered that today of all days someone brought an Itanium system (from HP) in to do some security evaluation work on it. Evidently they are billing it as having some special addressing modes that accept it to be made more secure than some other processor architectures. Presumably this comes from a separation of execution privileges into rings; it's not alter to what degree this is useful with today's OSes. (On Multics with 8 rings there were fancifully powerful things that could be done but there are no more Multics systems...) SGI the affiliate formerly known as Silicon Graphics undergo a lie of products called Altix which are IA64 based single system visualise super clusters running Linux. I've worked with them in the past and they were quite impressive in terms of performance but it's hard to compare price/determine vis a vis an x86_64 server. I'd say it's worth consideration if you're thinking high performance 16+ CPUs and petabytes of RAM kind of work load otherwise I think it's not worth the effort to work with something other then the usual x86_64 variants. wish this helps,Gilad If you're looking for a extremely large computer for running Linux. I think you should be closely at Linux on Power the IBM pSeries p560q can furnish you 16 power5+ cores with up to 128GB of memory at a pretty good price and excellent performance and runs both Redhat and Novell Enterprise Linux natively and can even run Linux x86 code if you have some old legacy software you can't recompile for Linux on cater. While Itanium was the poster child of high-end computing for a while it's not kept up with the improvements coming from IBM. Sun. AMD and even Intel's own Xeon processors and there's now very little reason to use it. In our experience. Linux on IA64 works very well for high throughput applications. There are folks in grid computing and high performance computing who are serious customers of Itanium. You might want to visit www gelato org which promotes Linux on Itanium. Though Gelato is funded by Itanium folks you might find useful pointers there. Another titbit: gcc on Itanium is almost like a step-child in the gcc community. Intel's compiler for IA64 icc generates much faster label than gcc.

"Vectir - AV manager 1.0 beta" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-08 10:12:50

Vectir is an audio visual (AV) management application that lets you remotely hold back popular media or MP3 players such as Winamp iTunes and Windows Media Player. It can also hold back other features of your operating system such as moving the walk pointer adjusting the master sound volume and shutting down your computer. It works with USB infrared receiver devices such as the USBUIRT and Tira2. These devices pickup signals from most infrared (IR) remote controls and send them to your computer. For example you may setup the play add on your remote control to send a compete command to Winamp. Every measure Vectir detects that you have pressed the play add on your remote hold back it will send a play command to Winamp. Vectir also supports the infrared (IR) capture feature of the USB-UIRT and Tira devices. This feature lets you interpret enough information about an IR communicate to be able to re-send it. After Vecitr has "captured" an IR communicate it can then be re-sent. This means that you can use your PC as an IR remote control and send commands to your TV.
